PCA Qualified Technician's Training (Damp and Timber)


The Technicians' training course aims to enhance the knowledge and understanding of experienced technicians as well as to provide a good foundation for those embarking on a new career in the building restoration industry. PCA recognises the importance for employers of having trained and qualified technicians and has developed a multiple-choice examination that lasts 60 minutes, which is taken on Day 2 of the training course. Candidates who pass the exam are entitled to refer to themselves as a PCA Qualified Technician.

 

Day One

(09.30 - 16.30)

  • Getting on with the job - A client's expectation
  • Health & safety - Assessments, PPE, labels, warning cards
  • Penetrating Damp and Rising Damp - Theory and practical issues DPC installation
  • Re-plastering - Materials and common mistakes
  • Condensation - A brief explanation
  • Timbers - Hardwood, softwood, heartwood and sapwood

 

Day Two

(09.30 - 16.30)

  • Wood boring insects - including Common Furniture Beetle, Death Watch Beetle, Wood Boring Weevil
  • Fungal Decay, Timber Treatments - Dry rot and wet rot
  • Basic timber repair discussion - brick pier, bolt on joist ends
  • Technician's responsibility, additional works
