Basement Waterproofing Project:

A large country manor house in Somerset with a dark and dingy stone, barrelled vault.

The Challange:

Conversion of the unusable basement area into a workshop and playroom.
Following a survey and discussion with the client, a proposal was put forward to provide a Type C drained basement waterproofing system, in accordance with BS:8102

The Solution:

The floors, walls and ceilings were lined with a cavity drainage membrane and a drainage system was introduced around the perimeter of the existing concrete floor, discharging to an existing floor drain in the adjoining wine store.

The floor area was then overlaid with 22mm moisture resistant chipboard and studding formed all round. Walls were plaster boarded and rough skimmed.

In conjunction with the main basement waterproofing works, two mechanical ‘positive pressure’ ventilation systems were installed to improve air quality, as no passive ventilation existed.

The Result:

Having completed the works, the client decided to split the area into two and a central timber framed wall was introduced to form two distinct areas in the basement. With the improved lighting and the introduction of heating, the client, who is a keen picture framer, now has a clean, dry and warm workshop, whilst his children have a bright and spacious playroom.
