Case Study - converting a basement area of a Grade 1 listed structure

Basement Waterproofing Project:

The Royal Courts of Justice, London. A Grade l listed structure with a labyrinth of unused basement areas.

The Challenge:

With space at a premium, the courts decided to convert the brick basements to a habitable area without compromising the original features of this historic property.

The Solution:

A cavity drain system was designed and installed by the contractor. The membrane was mechanically fixed with plugs, creating a gap through which water ingress could be guided to perimeter drainage conduits, which channel into natural drainage.

The water management system installed negated the need for expensive surface preparation and was easily moulded to the original building contours.

The system is deemed to be removable if required, in accordance with listed building requirements.

The Result:

The vaults are now used as a luxury bar and rest area to Environmental Grade 3 (BS:8102-1990).
The completed system was very well received by the client and is in line with The British Standards and National Heritage guidelines.
