Founded in 1884, the University of Wales, had its modest beginnings in a coaching inn. Today it has a 10 acre campus, overlooking the city of Bangor.
The Challange:
A specialist damp and timber survey was conducted in five of the older buildings, which were undergoing redevelopment.
Wet and dry rot and dampness were found, and cementitious tanking used previously to seal a basement area had failed.
The Solution:
Specialist remediation work was carried out to eradicate wet and dry rot, and dampness. Timbers that had become unsafe were replaced as necessary.
For the basement, a waterproofing system that used a cavity drain membrane was recommended. The studded membrane was fixed to the walls and floors, allowing a gap for water to flow behind into a perimeter drainage channel, and then into a specially designed sump and pump unit.
