This online training will enable candidates to develop their surveying skills for Japanese knotweed and, similar to our classroom-based training, details the background, best practice and requirements involved in the assessment and management of Japanese knotweed and other common invasive weed species.

This course is also the perfect preparation for surveyors who wish to go on to take the Certificated Surveyor in Japanese knotweed (CSJK) examination.

Who is the Japanese knotweed training course for?

Similar to our traditional classroom based training, this course will be open to both members and non-members. Aimed at those involved in and with some prior knowledge and experience of the identification, assessment and management of Japanese knotweed, and other common invasive species.

Structure of online Japanese knotweed surveyors training

The course is divided into two modules and is taught through a variety of live online sessions, recorded videos and reading materials. We believe this method of delivery provides a structured learning plan to you in a step-by-step format.

Module 1 – Invasive Plants - Core Unit
  • Invasive Plants: native and non-native, legislation and environment
  • Legislation: control, herbicide treatment and disposal of plants
  • Site Biosecurity: pathways for spread, prevention and site monitoring
  • Site Inspection, Risk Assessment and Monitoring: site investigation, risk assessment, equipment and mapping
  • Control Options: integrated pest management (IPM), revegetation and habitat restoration
  • Herbicide Use: categories of herbicide, approvals and regulation
  • Waste management: The Law, storing, clearing, disposing & incinerating invasive plant material, onsite burial and stockpiles
  • Reports and Reporting: site assessment, management plans and reports
  • Quotes, Warranties, Insurance and Bonds: requirements for providing quotes and guarantees
Module 2: Invasive Plants - Japanese and other knotweeds
  • Japanese Knotweed, Ecology and Impacts: biology, ecology, impacts and risks associated with Japanese knotweed
  • Identification of Knotweeds: Japanese knotweed identification, other Asiatic knotweeds, hybrid knotweeds, mistaken Japanese knotweeds & other plants
  • Knotweed Management Plan: factors to consider, determining optimal control, plan layout, recording & retaining information, contracts and a practical group exercise
  • Mapping: how to create a basic Japanese knotweed distribution map
  • Herbicide Application in detail: product/active selection, label and restrictions, NPTC certification, applicator/nozzle selection, sprayer cleaning and maintenance, avoiding herbicide waste and disposal of herbicide waste
  • Controlling Japanese knotweed – Part 1: factors that must be considered, primary control methods, comparing control methods, effective use of herbicides, excavation, clearance and more
  • Controlling Japanese knotweed – Part 2: factors that must be considered, primary control methods, comparing control methods, effective use of herbicides, excavation, clearance and more
  • Alternative Control Methods (and why they are unreliable/illegal): biological control, heat/steam/burning, grazing/mowing/pulling, non-approved methods of chemical control, light starvation and emerging technologies
