Evaluating Ventilation in Existing Buildings

Issues caused by excessive atmospheric indoor moisture, such as mould growth and condensation have now become the most common form of dampness with buildings. It occurs when the indoor environment is unbalanced and ventilation plays a fundamental role ensuring the balance is kept. However, how do we resolve this and how do we bring balance back to the building?

To help improve knowledge and understanding, the PCA now provides a 1 day training course for the evaluation of ventilation in existing buildings. It aims to provide the right foundation and learning for anyone that inspects buildings to understand the significant role that ventilation plays in controlling damp and mould issues and how to identify defects in ventilation systems.

Open to both PCA members and non-members alike, you can click on the button below to register your interest for the course. Alternatively, to find out more, call 01480 400 000 or complete our online enquiry form and one of our training team members will get in touch.

Who will benefit from the evaluating ventilation in existing building training?

This training course is aimed at those already involved or who wish to become involved in the surveying of dampness related problems in residential buildings. Ideally delegates should have a building/trade background as well as some related skill, knowledge or experience.

The course provides delegates with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and understand ventilation systems 1—4 as defined in approved document F. The day will also cover PIV systems and probable defects that can occur within buildings.

How is this training course structured?

The one day course is delivered at the PCA head office and covers the following areas.

Topics covered will include:
  • The ideal scenario –Ventilation, Heating and Insulation
  • What causes moisture laden air to move within our homes?
  • The problems air movement can cause and the options available to resolve them
  • Moisture production & how problems effect health
  • Common Problems caused by Ventilation Systems (Noise, Thermal Comfort & Running Costs)
  • Approved Document B – Control of Smoke and Fire
  • Fire Safety in Purpose Built Flats
  • Approved Document J – Fuel Burning Appliances
  • Survey Process, Reports & Recommendations

Benefits of the evaluating ventilation training

  • The confidence and assurance to properly assess ventilation in the field
  • The knowledge required to take the guesswork out of why a building is surfering damp and mould issues
  • Gain a basic understanding of ventilation systems that meet the requirements of Approved Document F and be able to evaluate existing building ventilation systems against the standard
  • Your certificate of knowledge to demonstrate to clients and employers of the evaluating ventilation in existing buildings training
