Professional Biocides Register

Professional users of wood preservation products (used in existing buildings) can now demonstrate that they have been trained and assessed in the safe and effective use of professional-use only chemicals.

Over the past few years, restrictions regarding the use of biocides have been introduced which have affected the availability of timber protection chemicals. European regulation now states that many preservatives used to control wood destroying insects and rots, should only be supplied to and applied by “professional users”.

So why do we need a scheme for the Safe Use of Biocides?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) references a professional user as: “people using biocides in the course of their job or business, who have received appropriate information, instruction and training in their use”.

In response to this, the Property Care Association (PCA), has developed an initiative to ensure those who have received training and assessment in the safe use of these important and effective preservatives can be identified and verified. This is known as the ‘Professional Biocide User Register’.

Training

The training that is required is delivered as a one-day course, covering the safe and effective use of timber protection chemicals in buildings. Training will be delivered in the classroom reinforced by practical sessions and demonstration.

The course will teach a range of topics including site safety, storage, application and disposal of waste, together with emergency procedures and the importance of record keeping.

Once trained - the benefits...

All candidates are tested at the end of the training and will be recorded on this central register This will provide a reference point for both suppliers and consumers who want to confirm if a contractor’s status is as a professional user.

This will also act as a means for professional users to differentiate themselves in the marketplace, with the PCA issuing a ‘Professional Biocide User’ identification card to participants:
