Emily Halliwell is a structural engineer at The Concrete Centre where she promotes efficient concrete design and construction. Her role includes work on the development of Eurocode 2 and providing technical guidance to designers. She is a Chartered Member of the IStructE and the ICE. Emily is also responsible for managing The Basement Information Centre, which aims to encourage and enable good practice in basement design.

Stephen joined the Trade Association as a technical specialist in 2000 after 13 years working as a surveyor and manager in the preservation industry. He has been Chief Executive Officer of the Property Care Association since October 2012. Stephen is passionate about the industry in which he is proud to serve and is committed to delivering the highest possible standards of service and workmanship to consumers as well as first rate representation and value for money to members of the Property Care Association. Stephen works hard to maintain strong links with organisations including RICS, the Council of Mortgage Lenders, TrustMark, STBA, BRE, National Flood Forum and the newly launched UKCMIB.

Design Challenges of Podium Decks

Ben is Technical Director of CSSW London Waterproofing. He is does a lot of expert witness work in relation to water ingress and leads a small team in delivering waterproofing design of complex structures.

Ben was part of the committee which recently completed the revision of BS 8102 and is also a key author of the CIRIA Guidance on the delivery of blue roofs document which is due for publication shortly.

 

John Gilbert - Structural Waterproofing ConferenceJohn Gilbert

John joined MD Insurance Services (MDIS) in 2005 as a Technical Services Surveyor responsible for assessing new developers and refurbishment projects, for cover under the Latent Defects Insurance provided under the Premier Guarantee and LABC Warranty brands.

John’s career at MDIS has also included carrying out claims investigations and also assessing products and systems including innovative methods of construction for compliance with Warranty standards. In 2008 John became the Technical Standards Manager responsible for developing and updating both of the Warranty brands technical manuals into its current format. He also produces technical articles which supplement the guidance in the technical manuals and appear on both brands websites on a regular basis. John became Head of Technical Services in December 2020 and is a Chartered Building Engineer with CABE.

The Use & Advantages of Electronic Leak Detection Systems

Simon grew up on the Wirral, Liverpool Polytechnic and Cranfield Institute of Technology. Worked in Design and Development Engineering and Technical Sales in the railway, automotive and off-highway markets before returning to Cranfield to complete an MBA.

Simon worked in the automotive industry throughout Europe, and further afield as Program and Departmental Manager specialising in body systems, followed by a 3-year ex-pat role as General Manager for a Tier 1 automotive supplier in India. Returned to Europe and migrated into an Engineering role in EV and Consumer Product Lithium Batteries, before joining Buckleys in 2016.

In his early career Ian worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer working on projects for Ford and Vauxhall. He then worked as a Pump System Designer in the sewage treatment market. Ian started Packaged Pump Systems (PPS) 19 years ago to design, manufacture & instal pump stations. Lately he has driven his business into the ‘Internet of Things’, developing market leading pump monitoring products.

Considerations and designs of external land drainage to protect underground structures

Steve is a Chartered Civil Engineer and UK Registered Ground Engineering Adviser. He has worked in the field of geotechnical engineering for over 30 years. This has included design of dewatering and ground water drainage schemes and the investigation of leaking basements.

Steve has undertaken numerous assessments of groundwater conditions to inform both the structural and waterproofing design of basements.

Michael is a qualified waterproofing design specialist with seventeen years of experience in the structural waterproofing industry. His qualifications include a BA (Hons) degree in architecture, CSSW (Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing) and he is a member of the Property Care Association’s waterproofing design-specialist register. Michael has written and delivered CPD and training presentations for LABC Warranty, Premier Guarantee, NHBC, Chartered Association of Building Engineers, RIBA, RICS and more. Michael set up Peak Waterproofing Services Limited in 2020. The company provides professional consultancy advice, waterproofing solutions, structural waterproofing surveys and design input for new and existing basements, structures located within hillsides and more.

Considered Overview of Revision of BS 8102

James joined the PCA team as Technical Manager in 2016. James is a graduate of the University of Plymouth, where he achieved a BSc (Hons) in Applied Geology. Since graduating, he has worked in the property services industry, and more recently as a surveyor for a national preservation company. He holds both the CSRT and CSSW accreditations.

James is the lead on the new Residential Ventilation Group sector of the PCA and is hugely passionate about the need for improving standards of ventilation in the existing UK housing stock.

Kevin heads business development, taking a strong active lead in product research and development, training and knowledge exchange activities within the Waterproofing Sector.

He has a practical and pragmatic approach and has developed a formidable reputation among his clients and peers for effective waterproofing design. Kevin has a successful history within the Structural Waterproofing sector, bringing with him over 30 years’ experience, especially within regulated structural waterproofing and waterproofing design.

Kevin has been a valid committee member of the BSI BS8102 Review Committee 2009, BSI8102 Review Committee 2020/21 and the NHBC Task Group for the New Standards of Waterproofing of Basements and Other Below Ground Structures. He continues his roles as Chairman of the Basement Information Centre, Technical Committee, Chairman of the PCA Structural Waterproofing Group Steering Committee and Examiner for the CSSW qualification.

 

Michael Earle - Structural Waterproofing ConferenceMichael Earle

Michael qualified as a Certificated Surveyor of Structural Waterproofing (CSSW), having taken and passed the examination set by the Property Care Association (PCA).

During his time as Technical Manager & Director at Safeguard Europe (2003-2014), Michael was trained on a one-to-one basis by Phil Hewitt, respectfully the top waterproofing consultant of his time. Mr. Hewitt approached Michael to continue his practice as a reputable party, pending his retirement. Michael acts full time as an independent consultant, offering expert advice to different parties on building, damp-proofing and waterproofing disputes.

He is currently reviewing and updating the CSSW (Certificated Surveyor in Structural
Waterproofing) qualification for the PCA, for which he is an examiner of as well as running the training courses for the CSSW qualification from 2015. Michael is a Retained Consultant for insurance services for structural waterproofing (Insured Guarantees,
Construction Guarantee Services), chosen trainer for the NHBC (National Home Building Council), a member of the PCA Structural Waterproofing committee and a member of the British Standards Institute Committee for BS8102.

 

Patrick Flood - Structural Waterproofing ConferencePatrick Flood

Patrick has over 16 years research, design and practical experience in geotechnical/geo-environmental engineering related to many areas of the built environment including the investigation, design and construction of a wide variety of projects incorporating geosynthetic solutions. He presents lectures to professional groups around the UK on the geotechnical aspects of inclusion of geosynthetics into design, and the sustainable appropriate use of geosynthetics in the built environment.

As a member of a number of UK trade associations and technical committees, Patrick continues to promote the sustainable use of geosynthetics in the built environment, and has recently been involved on the drafting committees for three key guidance documents for the Structural waterproofing industry, including BS 8102 Code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground – revision.

Richard has 29 years of experience in manufacturing, of which 20 years have been in construction and structural waterproofing. As well as his role as Technical Director at Newton Waterproofing Systems, Richard is a registered Waterproofing Design Specialist and also acts as a CSSW oral examiner, as well as being CSSW qualified himself. Most recently Richard was a member of the BS 8102:2022 re-write committee.

Richard’s excellent specialist knowledge of the construction process and how it pertains to structural waterproofing and the relevant industry standards has resulted in Newton Waterproofing Systems specifying and supplying some of the UK’s largest below-ground waterproofing projects, in which Richard has had direct, first-hand experience.
