flood protection - help and advice

Welcome to The Property Care Association » Flood Protection

Skill: Flood Protection

Flood protection

Changing weather patterns in the UK have brought the importance of protecting your home from flooding into stark focus. Flooding is already the most common form of natural disaster in the UK and all predictions suggest that widespread flooding and flash flood events are set to increase.

To respond to this growing threat and to help homeowners, local authorities and property professionals mitigate against the potentially devastating effects of flooding, The Property Care Association have devised the ‘Flood Protection Group’ to help homeowners get in touch with qualified flood protection experts and to provide specialist flood protection training for property professionals.

What is flood protection

Flood protection refers to actions you can take to minimise your risk from potential flood damage. As a first step it is important to be aware of your flood risk – especially if you live in an area with a history of flood events. Following on from this you should take proper precautions such as pre-planning what to do in the event of a flood and making moves to protect your property such as installing flood defences like flood proof doors, investing in a sump pump and protecting doorways and air bricks.

Check if your property is at risk of flooding:

To provide expert advice and guidance on the style and type of flood protection most suitable for you and your property, the PCA have a list of certified professionals under our Flood Protection Group banner who can survey your home to advise you on the most efficient and effective flood protection measures for your particular circumstances.

What will a flood protection specialist do?

Surveyors will assess:

  • All ‘entry points’ susceptible to water ingress such as doors, windows, air bricks, vents etc
  • The integrity of walls and brickwork to determine their ability to withstand sustained standing water
  • Vulnerable internal floors – properties with raised floors, cellars and basements are potentially more prone to flooding than others
  • How adequate your sewage system is to cope with flood conditions – especially in properties with downstairs bathrooms

For more information on flood protection see our page flood defence systems or take a look at our video demonstrating how effective flood protection measures can be.
