Alternative Repair Strategies for Traditional Buildings

Sometimes things need to be done the old fashioned way! Traditional buildings represent 20% of the country’s building stock and our alternative repair strategies course will provide a practical insight into how best to restore and repair these structures using traditional means.

As part of our selection of courses for property preservation surveyors, our alternative repair strategies training is open to both PCA members and non-members alike and will also count as 6 points towards your CPD requirements for the year. Who is the traditional building repair strategies course for?

This training course is aimed at surveyors who work on traditional buildings, defined as solid-walled properties pre-dating around 1939.  However, It will be of benefit to anyone in the preservation industry that is interested in understanding how traditional buildings differ in their construction and how they require the use of repair strategies that are sympathetic and complimentary to the original structure.  Especially useful off the back of the new methodology on ‘Moisture and its effects on traditional buildings‘.

How is the traditional repair strategies course structured?

The one day workshop will explore how traditional methods of repair can reduce or eliminate the need to introduce new chemicals or materials that can permanently alter the performance characteristics of older buildings.

Topics covered include:
  • The use of lime strategies that reduce the use of chemical fungicides
  • The pros and cons of both modern and traditional building repair strategies
  • The importance of working with clients to set and deliver expectations
At the end of the training course, candidates will receive an attendance and understanding certificate and the course will be worth 6 CPD points

Delivered in association with SPAB

The Property Care Association has partnered with the ‘Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB)‘ to help develop and provide this training course to provide an exciting and informative insight into the way buildings can be repaired using traditional methods.

What candidates say about the course

Having attended the traditional repairs course myself, I immediately realised the importance of spreading this knowledge right through our surveying team. As a mandatory part of our standard Continuing Professional Development scheme (CPD), the course ensures that we can offer clients advice and repairs, which are appropriate for their traditional buildings.(course delegate)

I would recommend anybody who deals with older properties (50 years +) to attend this course even if they do so only occasionally. The course promotes a fuller understanding in to the effects of using the ‘wrong’ modern systems in old structures.(course delegate)
