#IPCC23 Speaker programme launched!

In the 12 months since the last property care conference the media attention on dampness has been unprecedented. There is no doubt that there has been a seismic shift in peoples' perception of what is acceptable when it comes to dampness and in conjunction, there has been a lot of media hysteria. To really move the matter on however, there remains a need for sensible and informed conversations.

The PCA conferences have always been a platform for learning, elevating standards and sharing knowledge and a must attend event for those wanting to be at the leading edge of the sectors we represent. This year’s programme provides an abundance of forward thinking that looks set to change our industry. So what can you expect from the day...

An incredible speaker line-up...

The first session of the day is very much focused on dampness in buildings and we are extremely delighted to have Kwajo Tweneboa, the prominent Social Housing Activist joining us as we look at the standards in social housing and the challenges they face.

We will also be welcoming back Alan Park from the Housing Ombudsman. The last 12 months will unquestionably have been some of the busiest in the housing ombudsman's history. What steps has been taken to improve the quality of housing, the impact of the events in Rochdale and actions taken since.

This session will be rounded off by yours truly and I will be considering the impact of lifestyle and if the balance has swung too far.

What's ahead for session 2?

We are also pleased to welcome Renee Young, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea who will be discussing the challenges and consequences of retrofit. We have spoken on numerous occasions about the unintended consequences of retrofit and as an industry which looks at dampness in the built environment, we are becoming all too familiar with it. Renee will provide a local authorities perspective and one that is all too aware of the consequences of well-meaning but poorly executed alterations to our building stock.

The reality is that many members of the association provide pre-acquisition guidance to those purchasing properties. There is therefore some dependence on the property market and Kate Faulkner OBE is one of the UK's leading property experts, who will be providing her predictions on where the property market is likely to be heading in the coming years.

Panel Debate & Session 3

The focus for this year's panel debate will be on the balance of providing energy efficiency, appropriate and adequate ventilation; the implications if the balance is wrong and how we ensure we gain competency.

Our third session provides the chance to get a bit techy and a bit nerdy and we are looking forward to hearing from:

  • Henry Zhu, UCL who will discuss his research into surface waterproofing as a means of controlling water ingress into masonry walls
  • Alan James, Dantherm Group provides an insight in to drying techniques following penetrating damp issues or escape of water, techniques and limitations etc
  • David Ramsbottom, HR Wallingford will be introducing us to the flood house, aims of the project and any early outcomes

What else is in store?

This year we will close the conference in a slightly different manner and we are delighted that the Revd. Kevin Fear is joining us who was the H&S Policy Lead at CITB until he retired at the beginning of 2021. He will be discussing the very important issue of mental health in the construction industry.

Much like the waterproofing conference back in July, we are also offering “early bird tickets” at a discounted rate - but you need to be quick as the offer expires on 21st August! Like always, these events provide a great opportunity to network and engage with peers in industry and a full copy of the programme is available below…
