What a year for the world of waterproofing!

Who could have predicted how 2020 would pan out?! It has certainly been one full of challenges, where we have all had to adapt and adjust to the ‘new normal’. Despite the pandemic, the world of structural waterproofing has been as busy as ever. Read James Berry’s latest blog as he reflects on 2020 and ahead into 2021….

An appeal for action to protect households this winter

Your Association is a regular attendee, follower and supporter of the work of the Healthy Homes and Buildings Parliamentary Group and as we enter the winter months, we are all too aware that many homes and buildings are unable to cope with the ‘normal’ levels of moisture.

Steve Hodgson, your CEO, has written to the committee urging Government to take action and address the issue of damper, colder homes as we see higher numbers of people spending greater amounts of time indoors, and our buildings simply being ill-equipped to deal with the stress of increasing levels of moisture.

We will update members on any response we receive and will continue to share this important message. For anyone wishing to read the letter, you can click on the button below.

A ‘FIRST’ for the Ground Gas sector

We shared with you last week how delighted we are to have achieved support and recognition for the ground gas verification sector, following the registration of our ‘Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Verification of Ground Gas Protection Systems’ qualification for a Gold Skilled Card.

The importance of this ‘Gold Skilled Card’ must not be underestimated. It gives the owner of this qualification the ability to go onto sites with proof that correctly identifies them as a ground gas verifier – a first for the sector – and we hope to see more PCA members taking full advantage of this once qualified.

2020 Awards Winners announced next week!<

Next week will see your Association announcing the 2020 Contractor and Student of the Year award winners!

As disappointing as it has been to have not been able to celebrate the great achievements of our members over the last 12 months due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we are delighted to present these awards and we look forward to sharing the news with you next week.

Avoiding the need for RPE during the pandemic

HSE has published advice explaining alternative ways of working to reduce risk, which may mean that some PCA members will no longer need to use respiratory protective equipment (RPE) for working with power tools. Their new webpage outlines control measures and advice on working with tools such as:

  • power, masonry or core drills
  • cut-off saws, handheld pneumatic breakers/jackhammers or angle grinders

Putting in place these improved control measures may mean no further use of RPE, or use of RPE with a lower assigned protection factor (APF). Members can access this information by clicking on the button below.
